The Best Coffee Storage Canisters

How to keep beans fresh, and the canisters that do it well.

Oxygen, light, heat, and moisture are what make coffee go stale. A good canister keeps all four away from your beans so the last cup from the bag tastes close to the first. Here’s what to look for, and the canisters we’d recommend.

What to look for

An airtight seal comes first

Oxygen is the biggest enemy of flavor. Vacuum lids remove air, plunger lids push it out, and gasket seals keep new air from getting in. Any of these is a big step up from a folded bag.

Block the light

Light speeds up staling. Choose stainless steel or ceramic, or keep a clear canister in a cupboard.

A CO₂ valve helps with very fresh beans

Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for days. A one-way valve lets that gas out without letting air in, which matters most in the first week after roasting.

Size it to a week or two of coffee

A canister that’s mostly empty holds more air. Pick one that fits the amount you go through in a week or two.

Our picks

Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canister

Mid-range

Best for: Getting as much air out as possible.

Twisting the lid pumps air out and creates a vacuum inside, and an indicator shows when the seal is set.

Keep in mind: You twist it every time you close it. Choose the stainless version over glass if your counter gets sun.

Airscape Classic

Mid-range

Best for: Beans in their first week or two after roasting.

An inner plunger lid pushes down onto the beans to press air out, and a one-way valve releases CO₂. The stainless steel body blocks light.

Keep in mind: The plunger sits on top of the beans, so you push it further down as the coffee runs low.

OXO Brew POP Container

Budget

Best for: An inexpensive airtight seal for a pantry shelf.

The push-button lid seals with one press, and the containers stack neatly in a cupboard.

Keep in mind: Clear plastic lets light in and there’s no CO₂ valve, so keep it in a dark cupboard.

Coffeegator Canister

Budget

Best for: Tracking freshness on the countertop.

Stainless steel with a one-way CO₂ valve and a date tracker on the lid, so you can see when the bag was opened.

Keep in mind: It seals air out but doesn’t remove the air already inside.
